Oh! the excitement of getting to do up your own room/apartment! Often this excitement leads to confusion as to how to go about giving your space a sick makeover. Although over time one gradually adds on to the room here are a couple of essentials that will help get you started.

Boys you just as well give this a read, the capacity for being excited to get to do up ones room is not gender bias. Here we go!

1. More than an essential I'd like to term this as RULE No.1 : Fairy Lights!

A complete must have in every room. The name should not limit its use by girls alone, these tiny lights are as versatile as they come. Pick your colour(s) and get on it.

They can be an outline for your electric guitar hanging, under your bed and around your stereo, in bottles of beer and whisky, create a barbed wire look or just scrunch them up in big bunches here and there; you boys. It's also a great decoration when it comes to house parties.

As for girls no instructions are necessary for the use of these little lights! However I'll help you start thinking. Be creative, write a word with them, make shapes ( be more original than hearts), throw light on your photographed memories, hang them by your balcony, attach them to your bed head or around your mirror!

Fairy lights in room decor for teens is to be sworn by

2. Photographs : Plaster your walls or soft-boards with your photographed memories. These can never fail to be conversations starters or make you smile when you're all alone and feeling low in your room. You can make a collage or string them up between two wall corners. You can pin up Polaroids or scatter them on your wall! Make a nice little corner of escape that will remind you you of your school days, friends, your dogs that you may have left back at home, family, trips, certain adventurous nights, and perhaps your dream travel spots. Choose what makes you look happy and hopeful for everyday, it might just be the first thing you see in the mornings, after you've checked your phone of course :D

3. Posters : Who has ever heard of a teenagers room without more than a couple of posters?

..................

That's right.

I remember around 10 years ago when I got my room, after sharing it with an elder brother for about a decade, I , following my elder brothers suit wanted to spruce up my room with a couple of posters. My first three posters were : The glorious and majestic ; David Bekham :P and The music sensation for me at the time Avril Lavigne and Cold-Blooded heartthrob Ian Somerhalder :')

Posters can be framed for a sophisticated look and minimalist. Having posters in the room does not necessarily mean you have to wake up to an eye sore in the morning. Simple, classic posters give the room and edgy yet sophisticated outlook.

A world map printed on canvas is a great idea for all the travelling aspirants out there.

One may also consider getting a printed wallpaper of your idol be it an artist or a sports legend, a dream location , favourite city or favourite landscape, be it New York high rises, North Indian snow clad peaks or a picture you may have clicked of a sunrise/sunset or at the beach.

Feel free to also hang paintings by friends or a street artist or artist you appreciate.

If you're a music buff old records or record art can also be framed and put up or just hung up raw, movie buffs should definitely get a couple of classic film posters like Pulp Fiction!

Try to put something different out, not the same old Bob Marley and or Marilyn Monroe blow out although I'm not complaining one bit!

4. Signs : These are a fun way to permanently showcase your wit, sarcasm and sense of humour. From room rules, to do not enters signs for rooms have evolved in a drastic way. You would not be surprised if you see a caution sign warning you of a loose tarantula in the room, or a room rule declaring you must 'puff puff pass'. Get whacky and creative with these, it never fails to bring a smile to peoples faces when they read these.

Positive quotes and sayings are also great signs. Try customizing and designing your own!

5. Bed Ellevation : The height of your bed from the ground can give your room a different look. Bunk Beds give the room an entire college dorm room vibe to the room whereas a ground bed gives a more relaxing and welcoming look (and several other conveniences that come with it, you'll know once you have one).

In smaller spaces alleviated beds provide a lot of storage space which is a great optimization and may prevent you from literally rolling or dragging yourself across the whole room as opposed to the ground bed which on its down side makes you a tad bit lazier than you already are, but its oh so comfy!

6. Cushions and Pillows : If you're a girl you will need more than just several pillows. No boys its not for their pillow fights. There's nothing more comforting than hugging a pillow whilst being surrounded by several others to keep you snug. Always handy during sleepovers and unplanned crash ins by your friends! Boys and girls can get creative with pillow covers from painting them on your own to getting your favourite words, quotes, actors, song lyrics, pictures printed on them. Pillow and cushion arrangements in the room and on the bed can also make all the difference! Remember to balance the colour scheme and contrasting scheme as well.

7. Seating : You can never have enough seating! If you have a large room it gets tough to make sure you all sit together and around each other although it becomes easier to fit in seating. Large rooms can be filled with cushy mini couches and comfy chairs and bean bags.

Smaller rooms limited in space is in face a plus point. Everyone has to sit snug and cozy. What I would suggest and have personally sworn by are floor cushions, large and thick square -ish mattresses make for comfy seating on the floor, they are great as doubling them up for laying out a bed for an unexpected friend, great for party games as one can arrange these easily and comfortably sit around for hours. They can be backed up against the wall or bead for a back rest. The best part however is that you can just pile them up in piles of two each or one against the wall and one on the floor creating diamond shapes. Thus occupying minimal space and make the room a lot more welcoming.

8. Lighting : Lighting can make your room feel and look cold both metaphorically and physically or make it look warm and feel welcoming. Yellow lights are definitely more of a yes yes than white light. Although one may prefer to have a white light above or in your desk where you may need to focus, study or work.

Fairy lights aren't enough, nothing can make you feel more at home then a well lit room also a great bonus for anyone who likes taking selfies around "good lighting" :)

Lamps can add a whole different look to a room. A lava lamp would give a room a different look whereas, a canvas lamp another. Get creative with lamp shades and lights. A simple lamp on your bedside is not only the safest option to go by but also a classic and functional asset to the aesthetics of the room. You may add a light saber : 3

9. Add a You-niqueness : Curios are a great way of putting your identity out there. One could have an old stereo, an antique clock, a marble collection, a ceramic dog, a dream catcher, a pipe, an old number plate, a grammar phone or painted stone, light sabers, a world map, anything of sentimental or personal value and interest can add the you-ness in your room. A unique object that you love is a great way to display your identity.

10. Arrangement : From the positioning of your bed (should be near a window or looking out of one) to the way you arrange your posters and wall decor to cushion and seating arrangements this little bit can make all the difference. Most often your room does not require a whole new look, try shifting things around a bit you maybe surprised. Make sure you have a long mirror and any other well arranged mirrors in the room.

Arrangement should be well thought out in terms of optimization of space available as well!

As part of arrangement if you have a comic book collection or music cds collection ot movie collection or a book collection that you are passionate about think of interesting arrangements of them in a fashion of a customized library that is open 24*7 just for you!

11. Colour : The colours you choose will essentially define you and the way you feel every morning when you wake up and everyday aftter you return from a long day. Dull colour will make you resent waking up in the morning more than you already may, and a colour vibrant room makes for a more attractive one. Walls don't necessarily have to be painted, in fact a lot more can be done with simple cream or white walls with colours that come through curtains of choice, cushions, carpets and rugs, posters, and any other such decoration.

You can get very creative with wallpaper and image blowouts as well!

12. As I started with a rule I'd like to end with one as well. This may be even more essential than fairy lights....actually, no...um okay well this may be debatable, fairy lights does seem to be making strong point there.

This rule is a reminder to always keep a section of your room clean and clear of clutter or a cluster of clothes. One must have a work station that is more or less a sacred space in terms of adding flashy decoration on/in and around it. It is essential to have such a space that counts for little distraction and enough space.

This should get you up and going if not running around trying to find what you need to set up your room or give it a new makeover. Remember to keep the room true to yourself, and not let the choices of so many ideas throw you off from what should be comfy for you, convenient, spacious and functional while being sophisticated attractive and so called oozing "teen spirit" and "rebellion" all together!

Get creative, Be Different!
